Power of Philanthropy

Everyone Has Something to Give

Recently, I helped plan and host a volunteer appreciation lunch at our church. Nearly 80% of our members stayed after Sunday service to share a meal and celebrate the collective effort that makes our community thrive.

As people gathered, an eight-year-old girl named Olivia approached me and asked if she could help. I told her I had something in mind and would call on her after we ate. She checked back more than once, making sure I hadn’t forgotten. I hadn’t.

While she waited, Olivia didn’t stand still. She looked for ways to contribute. She noticed my wife preparing trays of plated desserts and asked if she could help deliver them. My wife handed her a tray – eight desserts balanced carefully – as she made her way across the room. There was a small risk in trusting her with the task, but a far greater reward: the chance to affirm her desire to serve. In that moment, a seed was planted – one that will likely grow far beyond a single afternoon.

When it was time, I invited Olivia to help distribute materials for the next part of the program. She beamed with pride and handled the responsibility beautifully. At just eight years old, she already understands something many adults overlook: showing up and serving matters.

And isn’t that the true power of philanthropy? Not just giving of ourselves when it’s convenient, but stepping forward – at any age or in any capacity – and offering to give and to do what we can.

Olivia gave what she had, wholeheartedly. That’s the model.

The power of philanthropy isn’t measured by the size of the gift, but by the willingness to act and the greater impact that comes from everyone working together and offering what they have to give.

When we invest our time, talent and treasure to lift others, we don’t just meet needs – we shape a culture where gratitude and generosity become the norm. And that’s when the real power of philanthropy is expressed in its fullest form.
