Power of Philanthropy

Philanthropy for All the Ages

In my work with nonprofits, I have the privilege of watching many great organizations positively impact individuals and communities in a variety of ways. But one of my most rewarding experiences has been seeing the power of philanthropy passed to the next generation.

We’re in a time of transitioning in our household as our children head off to college and begin their own paths in life. It’s a bittersweet season. We’re excited about what lies ahead, but sometimes we wonder if we have prepared them adequately.

We’ve always made community service an integral part of their lives, but lately we’ve begun to highlight the giving of finances in addition to service.

Part of our family’s normal routine is to attend nonprofit fundraising events throughout the year. Our daughter joined us recently when we attended an event for a nonprofit that supports homeless teenage girls and young women facing very difficult circumstances.

She enjoyed the gala, and it was incredibly eye opening us when we visited together afterward. The event had a profound impact on her—particularly the personal testimonials from girls who received support.

She said hearing them share how their lives had been transformed—and in some cases, literally, saved—had changed her.

The ride home felt very different. Something important had taken place.

She had a lot of questions, as she processed what she heard. We were glad she knew she was free to ask us anything.

After many, many questions, emotions and honest responses, the bottom line was she wanted to do more.

She wanted to give something of herself, her time—yes—but also her own money. No matter how small it might be in comparison to what others were giving, she felt she needed to be involved … personally.

She enjoyed the gala, and it was incredibly eye opening to us when we visited together afterward.

It reminded us that the next generation is always watching, and as they say: “More is caught than taught.” This is the power of philanthropy for all the ages.
