Power of Philanthropy

The Stew of Stewardship

Stewardship is like cooking the perfect stew. It takes many ingredients coming together in just the right way to ensure the first taste is as rich and enjoyable as the last.

Of all the fundraising elements, I believe stewardship brings the deepest joy and carries with it the greatest responsibility. Once a gift is received, you are no longer simply the chef – putting things together perfectly. You become the server and steward of something greater than yourself.

With each gift, you are entrusted with the power of philanthropy to impact lives, families and communities in ways measured not only in money, but in meaning.

I experienced this firsthand when I helped lay the foundation for a $1.6 million gift during a critical capital campaign for a new campus serving children and families overcoming the trauma of abuse.

When the gift was received, I felt an overwhelming sense of responsibility to steward it with sincerity and intention. It wasn’t enough to say “thank you.” Proper stewardship needed to reflect a genuine, ongoing relationship – one that continually conveyed to the donor that they were a vital part of something incredibly important.

Each step of the process – identification, qualification, cultivation and solicitation – led to the ultimate opportunity to serve the donor with intentional follow-up, tailored updates, photos and progress reports, personalized expressions of appreciation and compelling stories from the children and families directly touched by their gift.

Stewardship, at its core, is about building layers of trust. It reflects the power of philanthropy as everyone involved – donors, fundraisers and volunteers – accomplish more together than they could by themselves.

In my case, this power of philanthropy generated a second gift of $1 million. Not requested. Not expected. Simply given.

The donor shared, “We are so honored to support and congratulate a successful campaign. We are thoughtful with every dollar we grant and seek to support organizations that show impactful outcomes and serve with gratitude.”

The is the profound value of stewardship and the power of philanthropy. When each element is well prepared, it isn’t enjoyed only once. It often attracts donors back for seconds.
